Chapter 8 discusses the influence groups have on its members including opinions, attitudes, and behaviors. For this assignment you will provide three web/television commercial links that appeal to a specific group. In a word document, provide the links to and describe the commercials and briefly answer the following questions about each commercial:
- What specific group does this commercial target?
2. Do you identify with this group?
3. Is the product/service in the commercial a necessity or a luxury?
4. Is the product/service in the commercial subject to strong or weak group influence?
5. Does the commercial attempt to change attitudes or behavior?
Commercial 1:
- What specific group does this commercial target?
This commercial targets black people.
- Do you identify with this group?
No, I don’t identify with this group.
- Is the product/service in the commercial a necessity or a luxury?
The commercial is by McDonalds. I would personally call it a luxury as this is not a food that should be graded as necessity. Unfortunately, some people do believe fast food to be a necessity as it saves them time by avoiding to cook for themselves.
- Is the product/service in the commercial subject to strong or weak group influence?
What the commercial has done is tie the product to only black people as there are only black people and no other ethnicity. This commercial may look like offensive to some of the people in the black community. The person who has shared the commercial on YouTube is also complaining that there should have been people from other colors in the commercial.
- Does the commercial attempt to change attitudes or behavior?
In my opinion the commercial is trying to change the behavior of the people as the marketers might be suggestive of the fact that black people do not like fast food and hence this behavior should be commercially targeted.
Commercial 2:
- What specific group does this commercial target?
This commercial is targeting the goodness in everyone. I would say the specific group it is targeting is the humanity itself, all humans I mean.
- Do you identify with this group?
Of course, I am a human and I would definitely identify myself with humans.
- Is the product/service in the commercial a necessity or a luxury?
The aim of the commercial is not a product or a service. In fact its humanity. I do believe strongly that this is what all human need these days.
- Is the product/service in the commercial subject to strong or weak group influence?
This commercial can serve to produce strong group influence if it is seen by many people, translated to many languages and understood by the majority who watch it.
- Does the commercial attempt to change attitudes or behavior?
Behavior is the result of hidden attitudes. This commercial is targeting to change the attitudes of humans to do small good things. If the attitudes with which we see the world is changes positively, it would result a positive behavioral change.
Commercial 3:
- What specific group does this commercial target?
This is an overview of junk food commercials targeting kid.
- Do you identify with this group?
I used to identify with kids a few years back but not anymore.
- Is the product/service in the commercial a necessity or a luxury?
Junk food is kind of luxury if you ask me. I mean who needs it as a necessity.
- Is the product/service in the commercial subject to strong or weak group influence?
Junk food commercials use color and animation schemes that sometimes calls for kids to interact in groups and enjoy the junk food.
- Does the commercial attempt to change attitudes or behavior?
What the overview of the junk food commercial is saying is that these commercials target the eating habits or behavior of kids and compel them to try the junk food which is not always good for health.
