The Interview

Country: Haiti (lived in Cuba for the first 19 years of his life)

Question 1: What is the impact of the culture of African descents on Haiti?

Response 1: In my opinion, the culture of Haiti is influenced greatly by the Africans who came here. The majority of the Haitian population is Africa descendent so you can imagine what the culture of Haiti would be like. I think that Haitian culture has more influence on it from the West African part of Africa.

Question 2: How do you see Haiti from a political point of view?

Response 2:  Haiti is not a politically stable country since the beginning. If you look at the history of Haiti, there has been so many revolutions and rebellions. The latest rebellion has been in 2004 which called for UN peacekeepers to be brought in.

Question 3: Does the ethnical composition of Haiti has any influence on its day to day life?

Response 3: I don t think so. There are more than 90% African-Haitians. I believe that economy and political instability is the biggest issue rather than the racial issues itself. People in Haiti are worried about education, health and earning some livings not what the color of their or someone else’s skin.

Question 4: What do you know about Haitian Music?

Response 4: I have been in the United States for a long time now and mostly listen to RAP Music by American singers. I do tune to Hattian channels sometimes. The music has advanced since the time I migrated to United States. They still have the African drums and French touch but they are using latest instruments now. Though it’s more like Jazz and Hip Hop.

Question 5: How did you feel about the 2010 Haiti earthquake?

Response 5: I had a strong feeling about the earth quake. I personally participated in many campaigns to collect donations for the earthquake victims. The area I personally belong to was completely destroyed and some of my relatives had to move to other areas. Though none was injured or killed luckily. The rehabilitation process is still very slow and the UN needs to do something about it.
