What are the basic assumptions on which the hierarchy-of-needs theory rests?

Maslow’s hierarchy-of-needs theory rests on three assumptions. First, an individual’s behavior is grounded on his/her needs. After fulfillment of one need, he/she puts forth his/her efforts to meet other needs. Second, an already met need doesn’t motivate him/her to work but a next need does. Third, a person cannot move towards the achievement of the higher level need unless the lower-level ones are fully met (Mcleod, 2007).
