Define the term “hyper-criminalization” as explained by Di Girogio.
Hyper-criminalization is the process by which an individual’s everyday behaviors and styles become ubiquitously treated as deviant, risky, threatening or criminal, across social contexts. According to Di Girogio, the European immigration policies are doing the same thing. The discriminatively higher incarceration rates and punitive approaches specifically targeted at immigrants as well as the stereotypic perceptions about them are causing them being treated as deviant, risky, threatening and criminal and states that this is working as process of hyper-criminalization.
