Explain the following phrase “Like housework, managing stores fosters alienation and isolation because it “affords little time and opportunity for women who run them to develop other skills or to establish close friends” (p. 636 in Espiritu 1999).

This statement explains the status and the discrimination phenomenon occurring to Asian immigrant women who are not only required to do all the domestic labor but also work as free laborers in their family owned business to keep it open for extended hours, while their men only work at the store without helping in the domestic labor. The author tries to explain that taking the burden of both domestic as well as business labor leaves little opportunity and time for women to develop other skills or to make friendship networks. This is a phenomenon of gender discrimination against Asian immigrant women which limits them in terms of career and socialization opportunities.
