Measuring students’ success has become challenging due to the fact that education has become a global business and institutions of higher education have a diverse population of students to prepare for even more diverse environments, cultures and contexts to work in (Charles et. Al, 2013). Majority of the developed countries are offering higher education opportunities allowing students’ from all cultures, colors and backgrounds into their higher education learning institutions. For example US has become host to extreme diverse populations with respect to students base in addition to other immigrants. Not only does students’ diversity in terms of culture and socio-economic background matters but also each student individually has unique characteristics which emphasizes individualized processes of learning and cognitive growth especially in case of higher education context (Ensign & Woods, 2014). Extrinsic factors like institutional support and environment, and intrinsic characteristics of students like effort, commitment, self-efficacy and sense of responsibility affect students’ success in higher education. Research suggests active collaborative learning strategies like peer learning, increased teacher-student interaction, providing enriching educational experiences, supportive campus environment, introducing activities to promote critical thinking and analytical approaches, providing career guidance opportunities, and promoting use of library, to support students’ success in higher education (Wierik, Beishuizen & van Os, 2015; Ensign & Woods, 2014, Soria, Fransen & Nackerud, 2013).
Looking into the research, it can be concluded that challenges of students’ success in higher education are very high due to the diversity of students’ extrinsic and intrinsic characteristics, however, research has provided many ways to enhance and measure the success of today’s students in higher education.
