Equality and Discrimination
On the legal side, the act of discrimination based on race, sex, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation is considered unjustifiable. Cultural relativism plays a part in this as each culture will have its own distinct, but culturally justified perception. This contradicts the ideology that moral truth is universal and objective in that there is no such thing as an absolute right or wrong. Although right and wrong are dependent on the moral code of every society, the facts are that man’s opinion within a certain culture is the definition of right and wrong. When Hitler and the Nazis massacred Jews during World War 2 they did what they believed what was right, but their action was considered wrong by all others.
Diversity and multiculturalism are typically considered synonyms. However, there are major differences between the two such as diversity looks at the differences between individual persons and multiculturalism looks at the differences between cultures. Instead of looking at race, sex, religion as diversity does, multiculturalism looks at racial, religious, or cultural groups that are created from behaviors, assumptions, values, thinking patterns and styles of communication.
If we look at diversity and multiculturalism we think that just someone’s gender, skin color, social class or religion should not matter. We can use diversity to better understand the differences between people, while using multiculturalism as a way to look at the differences between groups of people. We should further the concepts of both diversity and multiculturalism as it can better obtain a better society throughout the world. I believe a lot is lost with people when they do not understand a person’s beliefs, but being able to better understand, could generate better knowledge and would allow someone to see another person, or cultures reasoning.
