The Reverse Outline
Instructions:
These directions are in the Course Content section in the Bb course shell.
The reverse outline as a tool to improve the clarity and organization of an essay.
The idea is to boil down your paragraphs to their main ideas and see if the ideas make sense
- Does each paragraph relate to the main idea of the paragraph and the thesis?
- Are there places where the flow of the paragraph is unclear?
- Do paragraphs repeat one idea?
- Does one paragraph include multiple ideas that should be in separate paragraphs?
You will end up with a list of sentences corresponding to the paragraphs in your paper. They should make sense to anyone who reads them.
How to create a Reverse Outline
- Start with the MWA # 3 essay. Number the paragraphs.
- Construct the Reverse Outline by listing the main idea of each paragraph in your draft in a blank document. If a paragraph’s topic sentence provides a succinct version of the paragraph’s main idea, you can put that sentence into the outline as a summary for that paragraph. Otherwise, write a one-sentence summary to express the main point of each numbered paragraph.
Please go to this link from the “The Writer’s Handbook” at the University of Wisconsin for more information and an example of what the reverse outline looks like, http://writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/ReverseOutlines.html.
Remember, your paper will also have the thesis of your paper above the first entry of the reverse outline.
