Importance of Being Earnest and Pygmalion
Both The Importance of Being Earnest and Pygmalion are set in the early 20th century, but their issues are still highlighted in the 21st century, especially pertaining to marriage.
In The Importance of Being Earnest lady bracknell (mother) of the daughter wanted her to marry a man that can provide. It was a funny story that consisted of lies, which still continue to this day. Many people not just her mother feel that they need to choose someone of a certain social class. They often interrogate or ask a bunch of questions to obtain answers as to weather or not this person is financially ready to take care of them. The story consisted of two guys who make up fake people so they can get away, I believe a lot of people do this they may even use their kids as an excuse. They use the health of someone they don’t know to call out of work or just an excuse not to do something they don’t want to do.
In the story Pygmalion by George Bernard he fell in love with a sculpture. There are many who love their possessions, probably more than he loved his statue. We seem to put these items on a higher ground, sometimes they treat them as though they had a personality. Individuals of this day and age treat their car, house or even jewelry better than they treat real people.
Social class can also be seen today, the behavior of upper class and that have lower class usually are different. In Pygmalion, he fell in love with beauty and looks and in importance of begin earnest they had certain concepts of what upper, middle and lower class should look like. Keeping up with appearances seems to be the most important thing in both stories
