Video Title: The power believing that you can improve
Speaker: Dr. Carol Dweck
Dr. Carol Dweck is a professor of Psychology at the Stanford University (“Carol Dweck – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia,” n.d.). Her research interests include motivation, personality and developmental psychology. She has authored many books including the best seller, “Mindset”.
The speaker starts her TED talk by talking about a high school in Chicago (“Carol Dweck: The power of believing that you can improve | TED Talk | TED.com,” n.d.). In the school the student who failed were given a grade “not yet”. The speaker appreciates the idea as she thinks that it is important to provide the students with the needed motivation to try again once they have failed. Grading student with “fail” will affect their motivation negatively.
There are two mindsets according to the speaker. The first is growth mindset and the second is fixed mindsets. The speaker has explained with several examples that the people with a growth mindset are not demotivated by challenges that they cannot overcome yet. They strive to try harder and get to the desired success ultimately. Contrary to that, people with fixed mindset do not try enough. Their thinking is fixed and if they fail once, they stop trying and believe that that cannot overcome the challenge that they failed once. The key to success is not some kind of genius or some God gifted qualities but it is to believe in yourself and make proper preparation and planning. Only then can we get out of the fixed mindset and adopt to a growth mindset.
I have always been thinking that it is a set of some kind of Got gifted qualities that successful leaders, politicians, social workers and famous sportsperson possess that make them so successful, but after watching this video I have realized that it is hard work, passion and preparation that makes you successful. You might have many innate qualities but if you don’t try hard and smart, you would definitely not succeed to the extent that you expect and wish for.

Video Title: What it takes to be a great leader
Speaker: Roselinde Torres
Roselinde Torres is a researcher in the field of leadership (“Roselinde Torres: What it takes to be a great leader | TED Talk | TED.com,” n.d.). She studies different leadership styles and strategies to investigate the key traits of leadership. She is also a passionate speaker and informs others about the results of her leadership research.
I the TED talk that I watched (“Roselinde Torres: What it takes to be a great leader | TED Talk | TED.com,” n.d.), the speaker provides a detailed overview of her quest to investigate why some people are leading with example without being in charge of overwhelming resources. She quit her job and travelled to many countries of the world in her quest. She travelled to South Africa to learn about how Nelson Mandela was able to anticipate future. She also studied about how little financial investments have made greater impacts on the overall growth of certain organizations.
As a result of her research, she was able to come up with three questions, whose answer was a key to a successful leader. These questions hold the key to the characteristics of leaders who thrive and do something different that make them so successful. These three main questions are: 1. Where you looking to anticipate change? 2. What is the diversity measure of your network? 3. Are you courageous enough to abandon the past? A successful leader must be able to see the future and make changes in their organizational activities to be able to adopt to the future. He/she must have a diverse group of contact from different walks of the life and different cultures from whom they can learn to work in the multinational business market. He/she must able to let go of past and learn to move on and change according to the needs of the time.
