Key concepts appear everywhere in the story and in every story such as memory, time, and ocean. Most common theme is the memory when Jack lost his father before 20 years and he couldn’t let go of him, as he always went diving in the ocean and as he said that he could see a ghost (his father) to talk and see him. Even in this personal essay has a lot of themes, such as, culture, friendship, hospitality and more. One of the most common themes is culture which shows the difference between two the American and the Sudanese which the Sudanese friend insists to the American to cross the river.

Time was expressed when Jack lost his father before 20 years and memory shows also he can’t get over his father that died in 20 years ago while diving, so Jack went diving searching for his father and he kept contacting with  a ghost (his father) In the ocean. There is specific techniques and language clues that the author express culture and hospitality. Where in the essay both of the American and the suddenness had different cultures where the American respected the Sudanese when he talked about his culture and how badly he wanted him to cross the river.
